Intellectual Property ID with ePosition

Nowadays, billions of contents are created in forms of photos, videos, writings, etc. in the web. All are distributed by the act of ‘sharing’ to different platforms and people. These content producers are not only big corporates or professionals, but also individual users. The power of individual users is getting more and more influential.

Nevertheless, the ownerships of the contents – thus the intellectual property – are not as much powerful as the growing individuals yet. For example, Youtube and Facebook utlizies users’ contents to earn advertising profits and compensate the users with providing only a small portion of their profits. Other content platforms like Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. are not different. If seen deeper through the cycle, shared or reproduced contents – with or without the owner’s consent – are seldom being compensated to the original owners.

Intellectual Property and identifier

There are numerous reasons behind such weak intellectual property, but the fact that each content has no clear, unified identification is undoubtedly contributes to this unbalance.

All the contents in Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, etc. are identified by each platform’s own URL scheme and content ids, which are not structured for content owners’ to manage. For example, one’s photo posted on Facebook is identified like www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1020526310****1435&set=a.1451869171110*****673.1064672327.  Youtube video id is www.youtube.com/watch?v=IK***Z0fWIFl-Y, Instagram photo id is instagram.com/p/4J***6nuse/?taken-by=p**iho.

With such identifiers, content owners have vague direct access to each content and no control over managing the original and copied files. For such reason, someone can easily copy one’s content file and post on his or her own website or SNS as if it is his or hers. Such weak ownership, however, will gradually be strengthened in the near future.

Photos/Video with ePosition

ePosition can serve as a unified identifier for one’s own content. Rather than having my photo linked with a URL of Facebook, and Instagram, each content can be in the domain of my own identifier. For example,

This photo will have a ePosition URI, 2014-seoul-trip#parkjiho.kr, and will be shared on Facebook, Instagram, and my blog with it. ePosition URI not only has names with a form of ‘#’, but also can be accessed through the web browser, just like http or smtp, as a new protocol. ePosition URI will remain regardless of what kind of platform it is distributed to and will enable content owners to track where and how many times the content is distributed. Unlike the current method of identifying contents (through URL), ePosition URI can protect and strengthen the content owners’ intellectual property. (이포지션 방식은 단지 #을 통한 이름만 가지고 있는 것이 아니라 http 나 smtp 방식처럼 새로운 프로토콜로써 인터넷 서핑 창에서 바로 주소를 치고 access 할 수 있다. 이러한 id 를 가진 사진이나 비디오 등의 파일은 어떤 플랫폼으로 공유되든지 그 id를 가지고 있어서 플랫폼에 구애받지 않고 얼마나 공유되고 있는지에 대한 정보를 트래킹할 수 있다. 기존의 http 방식으로는 어려웠던 일을 새로운 e-mail like # 프로토콜로 원작자의 ip를 지켜줄 수 있다.)

Idea Snippets with ePosition

ePosition is not only limited to photos and videos, but also to small and big ideas or writings. Right now, we are working with a Idea Generating Platform named Crevate Ideation that guide people to generate idea through certain methodologies. All the small idea snippets are uniquely identified with ePosition. 우리가 이것을 Intellectual Property 의 Snippet 이라 부른 이유는 이것은 특허가 되기 전의 그야말로 작은 아이디어들이기 때문이다. 사진을 찍고 동영상을 만들고 글을 쓰는 것과 마찬가지로 새로운 지식을 생성하는 것은 사회적으로 value를 창출하는 일이다. 이렇게 창출된 value 는 특허라는 어려운 IP 가 되기 전에라도 그 가치를 인정받아야 한다고 생각한다.

idea.crevate.com – currently in service in Korea

In this platform, individual idea generators can claim their idea snippets and propose to other companies to buy them. In the future, such trades of formless intellectual properties will be as prevalent as those of formed goods. People and organizations will be buying and selling contents and ideas in small units and be compensated accordingly.

For this reason, having unified unique identifiers like ePosition URI for all any small unit of formless content and idea is crucial for such trend.

Now ePosition is currently patented and is on research by a startup called ePosition Korea, working with Prof. Lee SangZee from Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST).
